Looks, unfortunately, like the cause was pilot error. RIP Capt. Kuss.

Eerily similar to the Thunderbirds crash at Mountain Home back in 2006 (which gets a mention in today’s Aviation History post). It sounds to me like Capt. Kuss wasn’t in the mood to go flying that day, and got sloppy. Thing is, these guys aren’t allowed to have a bad day. He was too low, didn’t follow procedures on the shut off of his afterburner, and he didn’t sign his aircraft acceptance sheet. Not good performance from what a vice admiral described as “the best and brightest of Naval Aviation.”

Very unfortunate (and avoidable) way to go.

If I have an off day, a few people are inconvenienced and some feathers get ruffled - not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. This guy’s off day got him killed. Very sad it happened too.

We almost went to the last show he performed at, but chose to wait until the September show at NAS Oceana last weekend. They make what they do look easy, but there is NO room for error...
